Our battery powerpacks and generators use rugged inverters of at least 2000W rating, this is needed to supply the peak demands of professional audio systems. It is not a good idea to use regular trades generator to power professional audio (PA) systems, they run at full speed the whole time and have poor quality output waveforms that vary depending on the load. At best you will get buzzing coming through your music, at worst, sensitive electronics may be damaged. Inverter based generators have an "ECO" mode that allows them to automatically throttle back to suit the attached load, making them much quieter. Beware of cheap inverter based generators as they are easily damaged by even the slightest overload. The battery inverter packs produce no noise at all, but do need to be chosen carefully to suit the intended application as they cannot be recharged in a hurry.

New AV operators with limited electrical knowledge often learn about the importance of good power distribution the hard way. Circuit breakers will trip out just when the sound and lighting systems are getting to the most important part of the night! Power boards plugged into power boards and domestic extension cords are not the way to go. The term "heavy duty" when applied to extension cords has two distinct meanings. A builders "heavy duty" extension cord will have extra thick high visibility insulation and 3 x 1.0mm² copper wire, whereas extension cords sold in the entertainment industry will have black insulation and extra thick copper wire, usually 3 x 1.5mm² for reduced voltage drop under peak loads.

Medium size events and community concerts are powered from one or more 32A 3-phase 5-pin outlets available at most public venues. 3-Phase distribution boxes are used to access almost 10 times the power available from a standard 10A wall socket. This is necessary to supply the peak power demands of large sound and lighting rigs at concerts and stage productions or simply to provide reliable power for hospitality and catering vans.

Lighting can be tested prior to the event by simply bringing all the lights up to max, however sound systems have an extremely high peak/continuous current ratio and are very difficult to predict from the equipment plate ratings. The general rule of thumb for music is that audio amps and powered speakers will draw 1/8th of their rated output power at full volume. This is a continuous current value and the power supply needs to be capable of supplying peak currents well in excess of this value.

20A PowerCon Double GPO Power Outlet

The GPO outlet blocks are used as part of a professional event power distribution and are fitted with PowerCon input and output sockets allowing them to be daisy-chained as required using the 20A PowerCon leads above. 20A maximum rating. The Clipsal outlets are built with a sturdy two prong connector per pin providing far better plug retention and a more reliable low resistance connection than the single edge contacts used in cheap power boards.

AC DC Clamp Meter

This compact clamp meter provides high resolution current readings up to 80A ac or dc. The backlit 4000 count display permits readings up to 4 digits or 1mA resolution.
