What is the difference between professional PA speakers and HiFi speakers? HiFi speakers are designed to reproduce recorded music accurately within a small space such as a room, house or car; while they might sound great, they are much lower sensitivity (dB output per Watt) meaning they will clip (distort) or blow up if feed with too much power. That is why HiFi speakers will always distort when pushed louder in a large hall or outside - no matter how expensive they are. Reputable PA speakers on the other hand are designed for maximum loudness so that clear undistorted audio can be projected over a large distance (30-50m) within a hall or outdoors, they are always elevated on speaker stands or flown from the ceiling in order to project the high frequencies over the heads of the crowd. Modern PA speakers have the amplifier built-in to the speaker, require mains power and are connected to a mixing desk using 3-pin XLR (Cannon) leads. While there are many brands of so-called 'PA' speakers, in today's crowded marketplace there are only a handful of reputable brands that are trusted by industry professionals, even some well known brands have been selling 'entry-level' speakers that are not much better than the copies. It is well known that the claimed power rating of speakers is exaggerated or manipulated by marketers in order to sell more speakers - you will see different figures being used such as Continuous (from RMS current & voltage), PEAK, PMPO etc. Our speakers below show the continuous (or RMS) power output to make it easy to compare different speakers, however these figures will appear 2-4 times smaller that what you see on the side of the box! Don't worry too much about the power rating as it doesn't relate directly to our hearing and there are many other factors that can make the difference between a good and a bad speaker.

1/4" guitar leads are only good for a few metres at most before hum becomes a problem, so a Direct Injection or DI box is used to convert unbalanced 1/4" jack outputs from a guitar or keyboard to balanced 3-pin XLR leads for sending to the input of a mixing desk using standard microphone cable. Once converted to XLR the signal can be carried large distances without degradation.
